The Critical Care Nurses chapter was established in 1998 with the goal of improving critical care standards and advocating for nurses' educational needs in Kenya. With support from the National Nurses Association of Kenya (NNAK), the chapter was officially formed and has grown from a small group of about 10 nurses to over 100 registered members across the country.
Initially, membership was drawn from private hospitals, but over the years, the chapter has successfully expanded to include nurses from the public sector, fostering stronger collaboration and teamwork in the field of critical care nursing.
We are grateful to our predecessors for initiating the idea of uniting Critical Care Nurses. As we follow in their footsteps, we take pride in our achievements and strive to honor their legacy while they continue contributing to healthcare.
Over the years, annual scientific conferences have brought together representatives from various hospitals to share insights on Critical Care nursing, improving patient care. The primary goals have been to educate nurses on emerging trends, engage in community service, and provide a platform for professional support. While progress has been made, the full impact remains to be seen.
Critical Care Nursing has grown significantly, expanding from a few hospitals with ICUs to a nationwide presence, though ICU bed capacity remains insufficient. The vision is to establish fully equipped ICUs in every hospital or county. The field has a strong legacy, with Critical Care Nurses playing a crucial role in healthcare development, including contributing to the higher diploma curriculum in Critical Care Nursing.
